Plate Ceramic Incense Holders

How to choose a plate incense holder

Plate holders are the practical choice. Instead of catching ash at one end of the stick, a flat ceramic plate sits under its whole length, so what falls lands somewhere you can simply wipe.

The two shapes on this page

Kikyo holders borrow the outline of the Japanese bellflower and hold the stick themselves. One piece, nothing to lose, in matte gray or matte gold. Best if you want the holder to read as an object rather than a tool.

Plate and brass burner sets pair a plain round plate with a small brass stand, in white, brown, blue, orange or green. Because the stand is a separate piece, you can slide it along the plate or lift it out to clean underneath. Best if you burn incense daily.

One thing people forget

Check the thickness of your incense. These brass stands are sized for 2.7 mm sticks, the standard for Japanese incense, which has no bamboo core. Indian incense is usually thicker and will not sit properly.

All the ceramic here is Mino ware, made in Toki in Gifu prefecture, where the craft goes back more than 1,300 years.

Frequently asked questions

Will my incense sticks fit?

Yes, if they are Japanese incense. The brass stands are sized for 2.7 mm sticks, the standard Japanese thickness. Indian or Tibetan incense with a bamboo core is thicker and may not fit.

How do I clean the plate?

Let it cool completely, then wipe with a dry cloth. Glazed ceramic can be washed with warm water. Avoid soap, which can hold on to the scent.

Can I use it for cone incense?

Yes. Lift out the brass stand and place the cone directly on the ceramic plate.

Is it safe on a wooden table?

The plate catches the ash, but ceramic does get warm. Use a mat underneath on a delicate finish, and never leave burning incense unattended.

What is Mino ware?

Pottery made in and around Toki in Gifu prefecture. The tradition goes back more than 1,300 years, and the region is the largest ceramic producer in Japan.
