When it comes to interior design, creating a full sensory experience is really important. It's not just about how a place looks or functions—more and more designers are realizing how much of a difference smell can make in setting the vibe and emotional feel of a room.

Interior design can really indulge our senses: sight, sound, touch, and smell. By engaging these four senses, you can shape a space to look and feel exactly how you want it. The possibilities are endless. A space truly comes alive when all these senses are stimulated. Think of an ancient temple, a serene spa retreat, or a lavish luxury store—these spaces are often characterized by their signature scents, deeply intertwined with their ambiance and identity, right ?

Incense, a traditional element with rich cultural and historical roots, is making a comeback for its ability to transform interior spaces. Whether it's a strong scent or something more subtle, incense can completely change the mood and set the ambiance. Choosing the right scent for your space and the vibe you want is just as important as picking out the perfect furniture or art.

Why Does Smell Have Such a Big Impact on Us?

Because smell is processed in the olfactory cortex of the brain’s limbic system, near the areas where emotions, memories, and feelings are stored, it can strongly impact our experiences and feelings. Scents trigger emotional reactions and help catalog them in our memories. We often associate specific smells with the events that occurred when we first encountered them. Remember all the smells that triggered your childhood.

New scents allow us to create fresh memories, while familiar ones evoke old ones. Research has shown that fragrances can significantly affect personal mood. For instance, certain scents like lavender and chamomile are known for their calming properties, often used in aromatherapy to reduce stress and anxiety. Meanwhile, citrus scents such as lemon and orange can boost energy and improve focus.

Studies also reveal that pleasant smells can enhance social interactions and overall well-being. In interior design, using the right scent can make a space feel more inviting, comfortable, and memorable, enhancing both personal and shared experiences.

Incense, with its aromatic properties, adds a layer of sensory richness to interior spaces. Historically used in religious and ceremonial contexts, incense has evolved into a versatile tool for enhancing ambiance, fostering relaxation, and evoking specific moods.

How to Create a Certain Atmosphere ?

When selecting home fragrances, it's important to consider how they harmonize with their surroundings and complement the mood you've created through visual design. You'll want to avoid scents that overpower the room, causing discomfort. Similarly, you don't want a fragrance so subtle that it's barely noticeable. Striking the right balance ensures the scent enhances the ambiance without overwhelming it.

Placement is also a crucial aspect to consider. Positioning incense burners strategically ensures an even distribution of scent throughout the space. Take into account factors such as airflow, room size, and ventilation to prevent the fragrance from becoming overpowering or unevenly distributed. This thoughtful approach ensures that the scent contributes positively to the atmosphere without dominating it.

Which fragrances and how to choose them ?

The olfactory sense is intimately tied to memory and emotion. By strategically selecting and burning incense, designers can elicit specific emotional responses from occupants. For example, the warm, earthy scent of sandalwood may evoke feelings of comfort and nostalgia, while the crisp, clean aroma of eucalyptus can promote clarity and focus.

Different areas of the home benefit from specific fragrances. Fresh and clean scents work well in kitchens, promoting a sense of cleanliness. Soothing, warm scents are perfect for the bedroom, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Heady florals are ideal for powder rooms, adding a fresh touch to small spaces. Clean fragrances are often preferred in living rooms, and socializing places in general.

Furthermore, scents containing thyme, pine, and sweet marjoram can stimulate conversation, making them suitable for living rooms. Lemon is considered a great neutralizer for kitchen odors. Lavender's relaxing scent makes it a perfect match for the bedroom.

Matching scents to the season is also popular. Fresh citrus scents like mandarin or bergamot are refreshing choices for hot summer months when lighter fragrances are preferred.

Strategically placing fragrances throughout the house can be challenging. Consulting an expert can be helpful, as they can guide you in making the perfect choices. You can also go through a process of trial and error to find the perfect match for what you're looking for. This journey will help you learn a lot about your preferences and how different scents in your environment affect you.

Creating a Fresh and Inviting Environment at Home

No matter which method you choose, it's vital to ensure it enhances a sense of cleanliness. Rather than creating a heavy atmosphere that might cause discomfort in breathing. Burning incense is an option to infuse your space with a pleasant scent and tranquil vibe, it should be approached with caution. High-quality incense, used in moderation and in well-ventilated areas, is key.

If leaving a lit candle or incense makes you uneasy, consider opting for essential oils. Though you might miss the playful flickering of a candle, you'll still achieve a delightful scent. Essentials oils quantities however, should be used diligently.

Here is a delightful trick we often use to infuse our space with a refreshing aroma~

Start by grabbing a saucepan and filling it with water. No need to measure, just enough to cover the bottom will do. Now, gather some citrus—lemons, yuzu, or any citrus rinds you have on hand. Whether you slice them or toss them in whole, their zestiness will work wonders.

Next, it’s herb time! Sprinkle in your favorites—it can be rosemary, thyme, or mint, but feel free to experiment. And here’s a little secret ingredient to elevate the experience: a splash of vanilla extract. It’s the cherry on top.

Place the saucepan on the stove and bring it to a gentle boil. Once you see those fragrant steam wisps rising, lower the heat and let it simmer. As the scents mingle and dance through your space, you’ll feel an instant lift in the atmosphere.

This simple act fills your home with a clean, bright scent. You can even use the cooled water as a room spritz afterward !

And you, what are your favorite home fragrances ? Feel free to share your advices in the comment section~
