How to choose your Mino ware

Everything on this page is made in Toki, in Gifu prefecture, and all of it is meant to be used rather than looked at. The quickest way through the collection is to start from what you drink or cook, not from the colour.

For tea

The kyusu teapots run from 280 ml to 430 ml. A 280 ml pot is right for one person, 350 ml and above for two or three. For cups, a single yunomi holds 310 ml and suits everyday green tea, while the handcrafted cup sets of two are the usual choice for a gift.

For matcha

A matcha bowl is wider and deeper than a tea cup because a bamboo whisk needs room to move against the base. If you are starting from nothing, the four piece ceremony sets pair a bowl with a whisk, a scoop and 30 g of Mt. Fuji matcha, so there is nothing else to buy.

For coffee

The dripper and the mug are sold separately and also together as a pour over set in one matching colour. Buy the set if you want the pair, or a single piece if you already own the other half.

For the table

Rice bowls come with a wooden lid and a spoon, which keeps rice warm and lets the bowl double as a serving dish. The mortar and pestle, a suribachi, has a ridged inside for grinding sesame and spices. The ochoko set of five is the traditional way to serve sake, one cup per guest.

Looking after it

Hand washing is the safest choice for every piece here. Let a bowl cool before it meets cold water, since a sudden change of temperature is what cracks ceramic. Care details for a specific piece are on its own product page.

Common questions

What is Mino ware?

Mino ware, or Mino yaki, is pottery from the Toki area of Gifu prefecture, where kilns have been working for more than 1,300 years. It is known less for one fixed look than for the range of its glazes, which is why two pieces from the same series can read quite differently.

Can I put these in the dishwasher or the microwave?

It varies from piece to piece, so check the product page of the item you want. We recommend hand washing everything, and the wooden lids, spoons and pestles should always be washed by hand and dried.

Why does my piece look a little different from the photograph?

The glazes are applied by hand and react differently in the kiln, so colour, speckling and crackle vary from piece to piece. This is normal for Mino ware and not a fault.

Which teapot size should I pick?

280 ml serves one person, 350 ml to 360 ml serves two, and 430 ml is for three, or for refills without going back to the kettle.

What is the difference between a matcha bowl and a tea cup?

A matcha bowl is wide and open so a bamboo whisk can move freely against the base. A yunomi tea cup is tall and narrow and is made for pouring and drinking, not for whisking.

Do you sell the dripper and the mug separately?

Yes. Each colour is available as a dripper on its own, a mug on its own, or both together as a pour over set.
