朝Asa · Morning

The Winter Onsen Morning

Snow on the rocks, steam rising from the water. In Japan, a winter morning can begin with a hot bath. It wakes the body, clears the mind and warms you for the day ahead. In Japanese, asayu (朝湯) also means “morning bath”.

The Morning Bath

At the winter solstice, Japanese families float whole yuzu in the bath. The tradition is called yuzu-yu, and its bright citrus scent is said to keep winter colds away. Bring it home with our cold-process yuzu soap, the clean scent of a hinoki wood tub and a Japanese exfoliating towel to awaken the skin.

夕Yu · Evening

By the Fireside

Outside, the snow keeps falling. Inside, the kettle is warm and the light is low. The evening is a time to slow down, breathe in something deep and let the day go.

The Taste of Japanese Winter

In late autumn, persimmons hang drying from the eaves of Japanese homes, ready for winter. Our cold-process persimmon soap carries that tradition into your evening bath. It's our most-loved soap.

Cinnamon Hojicha Latte

A Holiday Recipe

Cinnamon Hojicha Latte

Roasted, naturally low in caffeine and gently sweet, hojicha makes the coziest Christmas latte. Light a stick of cinnamon incense, pour it into your favorite cup and settle in by the fire.

For one cup

  • 2 tsp hojicha powder
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) hot water, about 80°C (175°F)
  • 200 ml (¾ cup) milk or oat milk
  • 1–2 tsp maple syrup or honey
  • A pinch of ground cinnamon, plus a cinnamon stick to serve

Method

  1. Sift the hojicha powder into your cup.
  2. Add the hot water and whisk until smooth.
  3. Warm the milk with the maple syrup and a pinch of cinnamon, then froth it.
  4. Pour the milk over the hojicha and dust with cinnamon.
  5. Add a cinnamon stick, light your incense and enjoy.
